THE BEGINNING…
ICRC started in 2013 with a meeting between Kaye Hale, the creator of a substantial collection in need of stewardship, and her dear friend Nancy Michel.
Meeting in various locations, from the conference room at the Gifford Ferry to Nancy’s house, the group expanded to include multiple community members over time – all from different walks of life but with an overwhelming desire to document, preserve, and share the robust history and culture of the Indigenous peoples around our area in relation to the community of Inchelium.
Over the years, we have acquired the following collections:
Gerry and Larry Boyd Collection
Inchelium High School annuals, historical family photographs - mostly from Larry’s uncles Henry, Frank, and Walt Rickard - and newspaper articles.
Kaye Hale Research
Genealogy and family history records detailing nearly every family of the Inchelium area, historical church records from local parishes and the regional Catholic diocese, scrapbooks with historical newspaper clippings pertaining to Inchelium and Colville tribal matters, photographs of Perkins’ family property from the Wilmont region of Inchelium, books about Indigenous peoples and Euro-American relations, and research books for genealogy of Indigenous families.
E. Richard Hart Research
The Regina v. Richard Lee Desautel collection was donated by Richard Hart, one of our board members and the historian for the four trials, including the historic Supreme Court of Canada hearing. The collection includes books, files, documents, and thumbdrives with many hundreds of digital files and objects.
Glenda “Sue” McKinney Family Collection
Newspaper clippings, copies, and scrapbooks with information about Kettle Falls, and Goldie Putnam’s manuscript and taped recording of The Beginnings of Inchelium
Dolores Shaffer [Zaugg] Collection
Newspaper clippings, obituaries, periodical, and photographs collected over the years about the community, and a small collection of materials from the Inchelium Ladies’ Civic Club, which ran from the 1940s (World War II era) through the 1970s.
Bob and Judy Todd Papers
Copies of the Provost legal case, which assisted in the blood quantum determination and enrollment of many families in Inchelium.
Robert Watt Legal Papers
Copies of legal papers stemming from Robert Watt’s protection of Valican, B.C., and Sinixt traditional territories.
